w/ Domo Branch, Devin Phillips, Noah Simpson, Charlie Brown, and Eric Gruber

Jazz By 5 is a musical collaboration that celebrates the eras of swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz and beyond. The performance includes a mixture of classic jazz standards coupled with original material from the members of the ensemble, who have performed with legends like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakey. Saxophonist Javon Jackson initially comprised Jazz By 5 in an effort to perform, tour and collaborate with his close friends, all of whom have made an indelible mark on the jazz genre.

Javon Jackson is one of the world’s premiere contemporary tenor saxophonists, purveying a mix of hard bop with elements of funk and soul. Jackson has 14 albums to his credit as a bandleader and has appeared on nearly 150 records by other artists. He played in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and has also performed or recorded with Jimmy Cobb, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Betty Carter, Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Donald Byrd, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Bobby Hutcherson, Stanley Turrentine, Christian McBride, Dianne Reeves, Kenny Garrett, John Medeski, and Ben E. “There’s no disputing his improvisational agility or his abilities to deliver magnetic melodies and emotional heft.” – DownBeat
