Event Details

Black Parent Initiative presents our 8th Annual Parent Symposium, “Today’s Black Parent” and “Youth STEAM Xplosion.”

This is a dual event. The Parent Symposium portion is a safe space & community for all parents of Black, Biracial, or Multi-Ethnic children to attend freely. Where continental breakfast, lunch, and childcare will be provided.

Simultaneously while the Parent Symposium is happening for the parents, the BPI “Youth STEAM Xplosion” will be happening for students ages 6-18. We will have amazing STEAM partners like;
* Brothaman Tech
* Mystiques Fancy Faces
* Building Blocks to Success
* Airway Science for Kids
* Portland Children’s Museum,

* FIRST 1,000 DAYS; This workshop breaks down the needs and necessities of a child in their first 1,000 days. While also addessing how to reduce the infant mortality rate amongst black babies.

* INTRO TO PARENT UNIVERSITY; This workshop introduces parents to the materials and curriculum BPI offers in our Parent University Classes throughout the year.

* EMPOWERING YOUR CHILD’S VOICE; This workshop provides parents with the necessary tools, supports, and resources to properly advocate for their children in systems that aren’t designed to empower black children.

* RESPONDING TO TRAUMA; This workshop equips parents to properly confront and respond to their own trauma, as well as identify how that trauma or other traumas can/does impact their children.

* POSITIVE DISCIPLINE; This workshop will help parents navigate the tough terrain of the seas of discipline. You can expect to leave with tools that help you find ways of creating structures that promote positive parent reinforcements.

* MAKING CENTS; This workshop is to help parents strengthen, and develop succesful strategies that will promote healthy financial living that ensure economic success for the whole family.

Lunch will be served while we close the day for our “DEFINING EQUITY” Black Educator’s Panel. This panel will consist of amazing local black educators who will answer some of your biggest questions on equity and how it relates to and affects our black & multi-ethnic children. Moderated by Joyce Harris.
